Maxine Sutton is a visual artist based in the UK. She lives and works next to the sea and chalk cliffs in Margate, Kent. Sutton is a graduate of the Royal College of Art and Ravensbourne College of Art. In between her first degree and masters she did a PGCE at Goldsmiths and later worked as a secondary school and special needs art teacher. Whilst raising a family Sutton has also worked as a commercial artist and designer in graphics and textiles.
Two intense years spent studying at the Royal College of Art in London, was a pivotal point in her career and provided an opportunity to explore and redefine the textile making, which had been suppressed during earlier art school experiences. In 2008 she was selected for Reflect Forward; a research project at The Geffrye Museum (now Museum of the Home) which included a solo show at Craft Central in Clerkenwell. She has exhibited at Origin: Somerset House in 2006 + 2009.
Recently she has been developing work in series’ exploring textile memories, waste, & fragmentation via abstraction. She has presented work publicly for the Margate Festival 2019 & exhibited in open call shows at Hastings Contemporary and Turner Contemporary 2021.
